“It would be great for every diocese to have a Resource Church – and not just one but two or three.”
The Most Reverend Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury
Resource Churches Pilot Project
Inspired by a similar project in the Church of England, the Anglican Church Southern Queensland (ACSQ) has launched a three-year ‘Resource Churches Pilot Project’ as part of the ACSQ “strategic framework to enable parish growth.”
A Resource Church is a particular category of parish who, in partnership with their Regional Bishop, seeks to resource mission within a region. These parishes have an outlook beyond themselves, seeking (where appropriate and invited) to share programs, expertise, events, and facilities. These parishes have the potential to be involved in church planting or revitalisation, along with offering placements to train mission-minded leaders for the future.
The goal of a Resource Church is to help resource mission across their region and be a catalyst for growth. Resource Churches will work closely with their Regional Bishop, along with ministry specialists, to help equip themselves with the skills and expertise they need to later support and resource other parishes, develop leaders, and potentially plant or revitalise churches.
Pilot Resource Churches
These parishes are:
- The Parish of Ipswich – led by The Rev’d Stephen McMahon
- The Parish of St Bart’s, Toowoomba – led by The Rev’d Adam Lowe
- The Parish of Caboolture – led by The Rev’d Avriel Green
- St John’s Cathedral – led by The Very Rev’d Dr Peter Catt
- The Parish of Kangaroo Point – led by The Rev’d Canon Gary Harch
- The Parish of Robina – led by The Rev’d Stewart Perry
- The Parish of Springfield – led by The Rev’d Charles Lacey
- The Parish of Waterloo Bay – led by The Rev’d Scott Gunthorpe.
These parishes were selected due to their size and growth track record; leadership capacity; demonstration of the core values of generosity, collegiality, audacity and humility; location; commitment to discipleship and mission planning; quality of worship; youth and young adult ministry health; and, strength of administrative processes and systems. The senior leader (e.g. Rector or Parish Priest) of each Resource Church will receive coaching, and will also be involved in a regular learning community of other Resource Church leaders

‘He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” ‘ (Matthew 13. 31-32)
